Overview

The most common reason for weight loss surgery is to lose weight or help manage a condition that might improve if you lost weight.

You’ll first be referred to a specialist clinic to see if weight loss surgery is right for you. If you have surgery, you’ll be told how to prepare.

Weight loss surgery involves changing the size of your stomach so that you feel fuller sooner. You’ll have the procedure in hospital.

It takes several weeks to recover from weight loss surgery. You’ll be told what to eat and have follow-up appointments with a clinic or your GP.

Complications of weight loss surgery can include blood clots, gallstones, wound infection and problems with the gut.
